Sony's PS4 had been the fan favorite coming out of E3, due to gamer reactions to many of the new restrictions surrounding the Xbox One. However, it would seem Microsoft has been listening to it's users. The company's President of Interactive Entertainment has released a statement, via the official Xbox Wire blog, that reveals that the company has turned a full 180 on its stance on DRM, and internet, for the new console. The new Xbox One now looks much like the previous model:
- An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
- Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.
This removes the two biggest drawbacks from the hardcore gaming community on the new One. You can now play discs in the same fashion as you currently can on the Xbox 360, without having them mapped to your specific hardware. It's also worth a mention, that downloaded games are still not available for sharing, but will be available for download the day of release and have full offline capabilities.
